To be fair, I will call it an unfair representation of extinction meant to cause change through fear. Completely without context in the headline or the article, makes it sound like those species just went extinct in 2023. But almost every one of those species had been on the list for nearly 50 years or more. The truth is these extinctions, and additions to the list, have slowed over the last 30 years. Depending on whom you ask, 73 vertebrate species have gone extinct since 1500. That's the number they use in the article, and they'll tell you that because it makes the 21 seem even worse. Even though all 21 were not vertebrates. Thousands of species have been discovered in just that same 30 year period. A record 800+ new species in 2023 alone. There are an estimated 8.7 million species on the planet.

Is the long-over-due Media Bloodbath finally upon us as three of the largest information gatekeepers have announced massive layoffs?
